There was a double reason to celebrate at Morpeth Masonic Hall on Thursday 15th February when the Provincial Team visited Morpeth Lodge No.691. Firstly, this was our second Provincial Visit of 2024 with 23 of the team, including those who are members of the Morpeth Lodge No. 691 attending, led by our Assistant Provincial Grand Master W.Bro. Paul Hilditch. The second reason was revealed later in the evening. A warm welcome was received from the W.M. Mark Beecroft and his Officers.
A talk was received from W.Bro. Lockey titled “A Northumberland Stroll” which covered much of the geography and places of interest including many of the Masonic Halls ranging from Berwick to Bedlington.
W.Bro. Paul Hilditch then rose to address the assembled Brethren on occurrences in 1983. This, at first, seemingly a random topic but it became apparent that the reason was to congratulate and celebrate the completion of 40 years service to the Mark Degree by W.Bro. Stephen Matthews.
This came as a surprise to W.Bro. Stephen and his face was a picture when presented with a certificate and tie. Briefly W.Bro. Stephen has held senior offices within the Lodge including 18 years as Treasurer and has been rewarded in both Provincial and Grand Lodge.

The Travelling Sceptre, without the use of a Satnav, has found its way back to Whitley Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 788. It’s there to be rescued.
The Travelling Gavel has left Whitley Bay and moved from the furthest east of the Province to the furthest west and is now in the possession of Hexham Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 1141. Perhaps it can now make its way to the far north to compete the Northumberland triangle.
