On Monday 22nd July 2024, a strong contingent of brethren led by our Provincial Grand Master, R. W. Bro. Ray Walton, welcomed R. W. Bro. Archie Torrance, President of the Mark Benevolent Fund, to HospiceCare North Northumberland in Alnwick. This was to officially present the Ford Transit Leader Luton Van purchased by a very generous grant of £27,300 from the MBF to the Hospice.
The Hospice offers practical and emotional care and support to adults and their families who are living with a life-limiting illness requiring palliative care across North Northumberland. This is provided within a person’s home by a specially trained nursing team and healthcare assistants, 365 days a year, day or night, with the emphasis on promoting quality of life. The service can be accessed via a GP, District Nurse or other Healthcare professional. This Hospice at Home service enables those at the end of life to die at home if that is their wish. The Hospice also provides Family/Bereavement Support, Dementia Support and Wellbeing Services as well as an information and advice service which can be accessed via self-referral. The care is delivered free at the point of need.
The vehicle will play a crucial role in the future initiatives of the Hospice.
It will support the expansion of their shops by aiding in furniture sales and by being able to move stock ensure that the Hospice’s shops have all they need to run smoothly. The vehicle will also serve as a transporter for equipment essential for their fundraising events. By bringing the necessary items to various venues across their geographical area it allows them to conduct these events efficiently. The primary purpose of all these fundraising events and shop sales is to generate funds to support the Hospice in delivering its services. This vehicle will, therefore, be instrumental in providing HospiceCare support and will have a significant impact in the local community.
The warmth and heartfelt thanks shown at the Hospice this morning were quite amazing and the work done by the team at the Hospice is truly remarkable. This was a very humbling experience which again made us all very proud of the wonderful work done by the Mark Benevolent Fund
Many thanks go to R. W. Bro. Archie Torrance for attending and making the visit particularly special for us and HospiceCare and to the Trustees of the Mark Benevolent Fund for approving this very generous grant. Grateful thanks also to all our members who contribute so generously to the Fund. Without your support, grants such as this would not be possible.
Another wonderful demonstration of the impact that the Mark Benevolent Fund has on our local communities.
A very grateful letter of thanks from the Hospice is shown below.
Many thanks go to the Trustees of the Mark Benevolent Fund for approving this very generous grant and to all of our members who contribute so generously to the Fund. Without all your support, grants such as this would not be possible.
Another wonderful example of the ‘Magic of the Mark’.

The Travelling Sceptre, without the use of a Satnav, has found its way back to Whitley Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 788. It’s there to be rescued.
The Travelling Gavel has left Whitley Bay and moved from the furthest east of the Province to the furthest west and is now in the possession of Hexham Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 1141. Perhaps it can now make its way to the far north to compete the Northumberland triangle.
